Together Against Trafficking

27 Million Lives at Risk

January is National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Millions of lives are impacted by modern slavery every year, but together, we can make a difference. Learn the signs, share resources, and take action today.

January marks National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about one of the most pressing human rights issues of our time. This is a global problem happening in communities across the United States and around the world. We can all play a role in ending modern-day slavery through understanding and learning together.

The Reality of Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit individuals for labor or intimacy. It doesn’t discriminate—it affects people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. According to the International Labour Organization, an estimated 27.6 million people are trapped in forced labor or sexual exploitation globally. In the United States alone, the National Human Trafficking Hotline reported 112,822 cases of human trafficking, with 218,568 identified as victims. However, experts believe the actual number is much higher due to underreporting.

Individuals who are most vulnerable to traffickers are those experiencing poverty, homelessness, or a lack of social support. Victims may be hidden in plain sight, working in restaurants, factories, farms, or even domestic settings.

Signs of Human Trafficking

  • A person who appears fearful, anxious, or submissive.
  • Signs of physical abuse or malnourishment.
  • Someone who is unable to speak freely or lacks control over their identification documents.
  • Working excessively long hours under poor conditions.

Recognizing signs can save lives. If you suspect trafficking, do not confront the trafficker or victim directly. Instead, report your concerns to the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” to 233733.

How You Can Help

  1. Share facts and resources on social media or within your community. Awareness is the first step toward prevention.
  2. Donate to or volunteer with organizations or local shelters that assist survivors.
  3. Contact your representatives to support legislation that strengthens protections for victims and increases penalties for traffickers.
  4. Research companies to ensure their supply chains are free from forced labor. Look for certifications like “Fair Trade” or “Ethical Trade Initiative.”
  5. If you own a business, consider partnering with programs that support survivors in rebuilding their lives through job training and employment.
