Overcoming Child Abuse

How Amiya Overcame Sexual Abuse
Amiya suffered from sexual abuse by her 14-year-old cousin for three years, beginning when she was just 6 years old.
When Amiya came to NewPath Child & Family Solutions she was struggling to process the trauma and abuse she endured. Instead of worrying about homework each night like a typical child, she had reoccurring nightmares. Instead of enjoying her friends during the day, she experienced auditory hallucinations that were very scary to her. She isolated herself from others and struggled to trust anyone. Her low self-esteem caused her to become emotionally numb. She seemed lifeless; often just staring at people with a blank smile.
Amiya’s NewPath Therapist, Jessica, began individual and family therapy with Amiya and her parents.
By utilizing NewPath’s play therapy room, Jessica helped Amiya learn to express her emotions and cope with her trauma through play in a safe environment. With this freedom of expression, Amiya was able to address her trauma and begin the healing process.
Today, Amiya no longer suffers from hallucinations or nightmares. She is beginning to “feel” again and can express those feelings to her therapist and family. Instead of lifeless stares, she greets people with a cheerful smile. Amiya’s past traumas no longer weigh her down, she feels free to grow and live the life she has always wanted. She’s learning how to be a kid again and no longer isolates herself from others. Amiya enjoys participating in after-school activities and even joined the Girl Scouts!
Amiya is still on her journey to recovery and success, but every day her family and friends can see a bit more of the sweet, happy, beautiful child she really is!
