Breaking the Silence

Men’s Mental Health Month

June is Men’s Mental Health Month. Explore how to challenge stigmas and break the silence through open conversations, early support, and redefining what it means to be strong.

June marks Men’s Mental Health Month—a time to raise awareness, challenge stigmas, and encourage open conversations about the emotional well-being of men and boys. At NewPath Child & Family Solutions, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that everyone deserves the tools and support to thrive.

The Hidden Crisis

Men are at higher risk for certain conditions, such as substance abuse and suicide. However, they are statistically less likely to seek help for mental health issues. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women. Many experts believe this is due to societal expectations that often discourage male vulnerability. From a young age, many boys hear phrases like “man up,” “tough it out,” or “keep it together.” These messages, though often well-intentioned, can create emotional isolation. Over time, this can lead to untreated anxiety, depression, and burnout.

“We tell boys that ‘boys don’t cry.’ We condition boys from a very young age to not express emotion, because to express emotion is to be ‘weak,'” said Colman O’Driscoll, former Executive Director of Operations and Development at Lifeline Crisis Support and Suicide Prevention Services.

Why It Matters

Mental health impacts every aspect of life, including relationships, work, physical health, and overall quality of life. When men are empowered to talk about their feelings and seek support, they’re not only helping themselves but also setting an example for others. Showing that strength includes self-awareness, courage, and connection.

At NewPath, we’ve seen firsthand how transformative it can be when men experience a safe space to open up. Whether it’s through therapy, peer support, or simply having a conversation with a trusted friend, healing begins with honesty.

What You Can Do
